PLANNED TOPICS OF STUDY Unit 1: Measurements and Problem Solving Course Description: Chemistry is a course based on regular laboratory investigations of matter, chemical reactions, and the role of energy in those reactions. Students in Chemistry compare, contrast, and synthesize useful models of the structure and properties of matter and the mechanisms of its interactions. In addition, students enrolled in this course are expected to: 1) gain an understanding of the history of chemistry, 2) explore the uses of chemistry in various careers, 3) investigate chemical equations and problems related to personal needs and societal issues, and 4) learn and practice laboratory safety. HONORS CHEMISTRY vs GENERAL CHEMISTRY   Both Honors Chemistry and General Chemistry are considered to be college prep courses. Both cover the same topics that comprise traditional high school chemistry. There are both subtle and obvious differences between Honors Chemistry and General Chemistry. The pace of Honors Chemistry is faster.  This creates more time to cover some topics in more detail.  This faster pace also enables us to incorporate more lab work. Another difference is the high degree of accuracy and organization required in both lab work and on written assignments in Honors Chemistry. Honors Chemistry also incorporates several research/project assignments that are not required in General Chemistry.  Your success in this course will directly reflect on the amount of time and energy you put into it. Here are some hints to help you:   Come to class daily and on time. Participate actively and ask questions as soon as you need help. Keep detailed notes about demonstrations and examples presented in class. Keep up with your work. Be open to a variety of learning styles and activities. Be willing to receive help from your peers, and help others. Remember that I am always available to answer questions and help you! Please come see me about questions as soon as they come up – don’t put it off until you are more lost and behind.
