Prejudice, discrimination, stereotype Prejudice and tolerance Objectives By the end of this lesson you should be able to… Know what prejudice and discrimination mean Discuss where prejudice still exists Think about how we can stop discrimination Keywords Prejudice, discrimination, stereotype

Ask what makes them special out of these things

In pairs: Can you think of an example for each? What do the following words mean? Prejudice Prejudice is when you pre-judge someone or a group of people. Stereotype Stereotypes are a commonly held public belief about specific social groups or types of individuals. This can be done through the simplified representation of character, appearances and beliefs. Discrimination Discrimination is when you act on a prejudice. It’s treating someone or a group of people in a different way because of who they are. In pairs: Can you think of an example for each? See if any students know these terms For prejudice it can be good to let them discuss what it might mean in pairs for a couple of minutes. Usually someone will work out that if they split up the word it gets close to pre-judge

How do each of these pictures link to the idea of prejudice? At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico to black US athletes raised their hands on the podium in protest to the way black people were treated in America. They were expelled from the Olympic village due to this. How do each of these pictures link to the idea of prejudice? This photo of a sign was taken in Texas in South Africa where white people used to be treated better than black people. This is a picture from the UK of the suffragettes from the early 20th century Sign from Apartheid South Africa 1968 Olympics protest Suffragettes

By law you can be any religion you like, you can change faith, or you can be agnostic or atheist. It’s against the law to treat people differently because of their beliefs.

You will be given a list of reasons why people might be prejudiced against others. Place the 9 diamond in order of what you think are most to the least discriminated group of people in the UK. There is no right or wrong to this but you will be asked to explain your opinion. Looks Disability Wealth Male or female Fashion Skin colour A diamond 9 is a thinking skills activity. There is no right or wrong answer, instead it’s designed to get the students to consider their own points of view concerning issues. They would then have to explain it either during discussion or writing why they’ve placed the diamonds in order. They can use the worksheet on slide 20 and can write in the words or you can have them cut them out and arrange them Music tastes Religion Write your own

Your diamond 9 should end up like this Biggest problem Big problem Big problem Quite problematic Quite problematic Quite problematic I think the biggest problem is… This is because… Not too much of a problem Not too much of a problem Then get students to write a couple of sentences explaining the order they’ve chosen Least problematic

The religious perspective O mankind, We have created you from a male and female and made you into nations and tribes, that you may get to know one another. (Surah 49:13) “All people are equal….as the teeth of a comb” (Hadith) Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6:31) Love your neighbour as you love yourself (Matthew 22:39)

Marvel has now also joined the debate by changed some of its best known superheroes. What could you do to help stop prejudice? Why is it important that we are all different?

In exactly 12 words say at we can do to stop discrimination Has to be exactly 12 words, no more or less. This makes it competitive. When someone gets 12 get them to read it out slowly and count along with them

Print the next slide for the worksheet
