Title: Jesus on the End Text: Mark 13 (Matthew 24 and Luke 21) Matthew 24:3 (NIV84) 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” By: Pastor Micah Adamson July 2, 2017 Matthew 24:3 (NIV84) Title

What does Jesus want you to do when… Evaluating claims in contemporarily Christianity…

The Olivet Discourse in the synoptic gospels: King: Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and the King/Christ/Messiah anointed one. Sacrifice: Jesus entered at the same time as the Passover lambs as our true sacrifice. Priest: Jesus cleansed the temple as our priest. God: Jesus is not only the rightful king and priest, but God Himself according to Psalm 110. Son of God: Rejecting Jesus as God’s Son leads to destruction. Temple: Now that Jesus has come, the OT temple is no longer needed.

The Olivet Discourse: The Olivet Discourse is the last event before Judas agrees to betray Jesus before the last supper. The conversation moved from the temple to destruction of the temple as Jesus and His disciples moved from the temple to the Mt. of Olives.

Mark 12:38-44 (NIV84) – The proud and rich teachers vs Mark 12:38-44 (NIV84) – The proud and rich teachers vs. the poor abused widows 38 As he taught, Jesus said, Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely.” 41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Command: Watch out for the teachers of the law!

Mark 13:1-2 (NIV84) – The towering magnificence vs Mark 13:1-2 (NIV84) – The towering magnificence vs. the temporary nature of the temple 13 As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” 2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Text

Mark 13:3-4 (NIV84) – The disciples’ question: What are the signs and timing of God’s judgment? 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” Matthew 24:3b (NIV84) …when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age? Acts 1:6b (NIV84) …Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

Mark 13:5-6 (NIV84) – A summary of Jesus’ answer: Watch out Mark 13:5-6 (NIV84) – A summary of Jesus’ answer: Watch out! Don’t be deceived! 5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. Command: Watch out that no one deceives you!

Mark 13:7-8 (NIV84) – Signs of labor: Manmade and natural disasters in general 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. Command: Don’t be alarmed (at manmade or natural disasters)!

Mark 13:9-13 (NIV84) – More signs of labor: Persecution in particular 9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. Commands: Be on your guard (against), don’t worry (about), and stand firm (during) persecution!

Mark 13:14-20 (NIV84) – Biblical Example 1: Daniel 9-12 “the abomination that causes desolation” 14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ [Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11] standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. 20 If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. Command: Let the reader understand (Daniel 9-12). Command: Let no one go down or go back to get anything! Pray!

Mark 13:21-23 (NIV84) – False Signs: Be on your guard against deception! 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible. 23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. Command: Don’t believe false Christs or teachers, or their signs and miracles! Be on your guard!

Mark 13:24-27 (NIV84) – Biblical Example 2: Isaiah 13 and 34 “the Heavenly bodies will be shaken” 24 “But in those days, following that distress, “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; [Isaiah 13:10] 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ [Isaiah 34:4] 26 “At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. [Daniel 7:13-14] 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

Mark 13:28-31 (NIV84) – Parable 1: The lesson of the Fig Tree (What you can know: It’s near) 28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Command: Learn the lesson from the fig tree (you can know the season by observation).

Mark 13:32-37 (NIV84) – Parable 2: The lesson of the Master (What you can’t know: Exactly when) 32 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’” Command: Be on your guard! Be alert! Don’t get caught sleeping! Keep watch, keep watch, watch!

Prayerful review of the Olivet Discourse to Confess, Request help, Thank/Praise God: Command: Watch out for the teachers of the law! (Externalism/Materialism) Command: Watch out that no one deceives you! Command: Don’t be alarmed at manmade or natural disasters! Commands: Be on your guard against, don’t worry about, and stand firm during persecution! (witnessing) Command: Let no one go down or go back to get anything! Pray! Command: Let the reader understand Daniel 9-12. (Bible Study) Command: Don’t believe false Christs or teachers, or their signs and miracles! Be on your guard! Command: Learn the lesson from the fig tree: you can know the season by observation. (See Jesus as the Christ) Command: Be on your guard! Be alert! Don’t get caught sleeping! Keep watch! (watching out and obeying until Jesus returns)

Mark 11-12: Jesus is enough King: Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and the King/Christ/Messiah anointed one.
