Where can you go to get help: WHAT TO DO IF……….. Every Kairos Leader is faced with a situation that is not completely covered in the manuals or by a specific Kairos policy. We are engaged is some very serious spiritual warfare, and Satan can be very creative with his destructive activities. Where can you go to get help: Kairos Short Course Manual Kairos Operational Manual Advising Leader Regional Committee State Council KSO CEO 7 WHAT TO DO IF………….............................................................................................................................86 7.1 PRE-MINISTRY, OR "INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENT" PHASE........................................................................................ 86 7.2 TEAM FORMATION PHASE................................................................................................................................ 88 7.3 COURSE PHASE .............................................................................................................................................. 89 7.4 POST-COURSE ACTIVITIES................................................................................................................................. 91 7.5 DISCIPLINE .................................................................................................................................................... 91 7.6 SUMMARY .................................................................................................................................................... 92 7 – p86

Pre-ministry or “Institutional Agreement” Phase WHAT TO DO IF……….. Pre-ministry or “Institutional Agreement” Phase Circumstance: The prison you are talking with about beginning a Kairos ministry wants to have the ministry but wants you to do the course in just 3 days. Response: Negotiations to begin a new ministry should only be conducted in conjunction with the State Council. Kairos Short Courses can be conducted in shorter timeframes, but not without the approval of the State Council and CEO. 7 WHAT TO DO IF………….............................................................................................................................86 7.1 PRE-MINISTRY, OR "INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENT" PHASE........................................................................................ 86 7.2 TEAM FORMATION PHASE................................................................................................................................ 88 7.3 COURSE PHASE .............................................................................................................................................. 89 7.4 POST-COURSE ACTIVITIES................................................................................................................................. 91 7.5 DISCIPLINE .................................................................................................................................................... 91 7.6 SUMMARY .................................................................................................................................................... 92 7 – p86

Team Formation Phase WHAT TO DO IF……….. Circumstance: You plan on having 5 table families on the course, but can only recruit enough volunteers to have 2 team members per table family. Response: As the experienced Team Members to assist with recruiting from amongst those in their Churches who have hearts for Ministry. If you are unable to get more volunteers, reduce the number of table families on the course until you can support a table family structure of 3 team and 6 residents per family. This design is intentional and important. 92 7 – p88

Course Phase WHAT TO DO IF……….. Circumstance: Something interrupts the course (counts, incidents, weather,) that causes you to fall significantly behind. How do you make up lost time? Response: You are given the authority and the responsibility by your Regional Committee to run the course according to the Kairos Manual. That is your job. In the prison environment, all manner of delays can and do happen-frequently! When delays happen, it becomes your job to make the best of what you have. There is some "fluff' time in the schedule to made the course relaxed. Try to keep it that way. 92 7 – p89

Meditations and Chapel Visits -their call to be spiritual WHAT TO DO IF……….. Course Phase Never Cut: Meditations and Chapel Visits -their call to be spiritual Breaks -nothing is learned if people are uncomfortable Discussion time –forming family, learning to be heard May trim or combine: Poster time –one poster for two talks, perhaps either/or Some talks May cut: Some talks if necessary. All of last day's talks may be picked up in the Instructional Reunion and Monthly Reunions or Journey programs Some song sessions 7 WHAT TO DO IF………….............................................................................................................................86 7.1 PRE-MINISTRY, OR "INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENT" PHASE........................................................................................ 86 7.2 TEAM FORMATION PHASE................................................................................................................................ 88 7.3 COURSE PHASE .............................................................................................................................................. 89 7.4 POST-COURSE ACTIVITIES................................................................................................................................. 91 7.5 DISCIPLINE .................................................................................................................................................... 91 7.6 SUMMARY .................................................................................................................................................... 92 7 – p89

Post-Course Activities Circumstance: WHAT TO DO IF……….. Post-Course Activities Circumstance: You are only allowed a half day for the Instructional Reunion. Response: Shorten or combine the talks. Reduce the "practice time." Try to organize the residents into functioning groups, if possible. 92 7 – p86

Discipline WHAT TO DO IF……….. Unfortunately, some Kairos volunteers occasionally become undisciplined or disobedient, and cause problems to the local ministry. Response local leadership to confront them in a loving and caring way to convince them to stop their disruptive activities. The only action that can be taken to discipline a Kairos volunteer is to remove them from participating in the ministry. 92 7 – p86

Summary / Questions WHAT TO DO IF……….. As a Kairos leader you need to be familiar with Kairos manuals, programs, policies, and procedures. You need to know not only "what", but "why". 92 7 – p86

Security 1 Do Not smuggle anything into or out of the Prison You may not realize that you are smuggling when you bring anything (including posters, letters, notes, etc) in and it goes to a resident, or if your bring such things out from residents. Everything should be disclosed in advance to the administration. 2 No Volunteer can be on a Visitation List Kairos volunteers are not allowed to serve in Kairos and also be on an inmate's visitation list. 3. No Metal or Glass Objects You are not allowed to bring metal (including notebooks with spiral bindings) or glass objects (including food seasoning bottles). Both metal and glass objects can be fashioned into weapons.

Security 4. Do Not Give or Accept Anything from a Resident This includes notes, poems, songs, addresses, phone numbers, magazines, photos, posters, birthday cards - nothing! And, likewise, it is NOT OK to hand any material to a resident. If confronted with a request to take something, always suggest checking it out with security or the chaplain first. That will usually end the request. 5 Do Not Purchase Anything from a Resident Not even through a prison approved procedure. Your relationship is a spiritual one, and it is most significant when money is not involved in any way.

Security 6 Do Not Pass Messages for Residents Never agree to pass messages from a resident to outsiders, or vice versa. You do not know the situation, and you may be passing a hidden message. The residents know that you are not supposed to do this. If you do it once, more and more will be asked of you in the future. It is best to never start. 7 Do Not Mail Letters for Residents There is an approved process for a resident to mail a letter or package. If you take a letter and mail it for the resident, you are assisting in going around the prison's security review of mail.

Security 8 Religious Materials Must Come through the Chaplain All religious materials that are to be given to a resident must come through the Chaplain, who will make the appropriate arrangement to get the materials to the resident after review. This includes devotionals, neat internet stuff, and even Bibles. 9 Honour the Manager's Authority You are an invited guest in the Manager's "house." The Manager has the authority to set the rules and procedures for his/her house. Do not resist or complain about their rules, or you may not be invited back to their house!
