INTERVENTION PLANNING MATRIX Activity to support learning

ABOUT THE TOOL Developed by the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute Download the tool here: http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/intervention- planning-matrix

TIPS FOR USING THE INTERVENTION PLANNING MATRIX This tool can help you brainstorm strategies and work toward the “sweet spot” of policy changes with greater impact Consider Will the strategies you’re considering have the impact you’re hoping for? Are the strategies you’re considering programmatic or are they on the policy spectrum?

TOOL ACTIVITY Time: 20-30 minutes Group Size: Small groups (3-5 people) with a large group discussion Pre-Work: Print the Intervention Planning Matrix or make plans to display in the room. Review the sets of strategies on the following slides and select a set to practice with OR create your own. Print and separate the strategies. Each group should have an Intervention Planning Matrix and set of strategies to work with. Facilitating the Activity: In groups of 3-5 people (5-10 min) Review the strategies Discuss where they should be placed on the matrix Notice what questions or insights come up during your discussion As a large group, reflect on your experience with the tool (15-20 min) What stood out to you about the tool? What was clear? What was confusing? What insights are beginning to emerge? How could you use this tool in your community?

TOOL: INTERVENTION PLANNING MATRIX SPHERES OF INFLUENCE APPROACHES INDIVIDUALS ORGANIZATIONS & INSTITUTIONS COMMUNITY (neighborhoods, municipalities, counties or state) PROGRAMS Activities focused on increasing knowledge about health issues. SYSTEMS CHANGES Change that impacts social norms of an organization, institution, or system. ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE Physical aspects of the environment that support healthy or discourage unhealthy behaviors. POLICY Policies, rules, ordinances & laws that support healthy practices. The intervention planning matrix helps you consider the range of possible approaches that could be used to address your identified health issue at the individual, organization/institution, and community levels. Some approaches may fit more than one box, just decide which is the best fit. The goal isn’t to fill out every box.

Obesity-related strategies Food tastings (fruit and veggies) Community gardens Walking and biking trails Healthy cooking classes School fruit and vegetable gardens 10,000 step competitions Sugar-sweetened beverage tax Physical activity requirements for schools/childcare centers Safe Routes to School Complete Streets Healthy foods at catered events Shared use agreements for community use of school gyms/other rec facilities

Create your own Use this table to create your own set of policies and programs to consider.
