Learning Target ELAGSE8L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Explain the function of verbals (gerunds, participles, infinitives) in general and their function in particular sentences. Learning Target: Explain the function of participles in a sentence. Review- What is a gerund and how is it different from a participle?

Participles- Verbs ending in –ing or –ed that act as adjectives. Present Participle- end in –ing Past Participle- end in –ed Purpose- Modifier Stylistic choice to create images in a text. Present Participle- Amber, working on math in Language Arts, tried to hide her work from Mr. Brown. Past Participle- With swollen eyes, Jaime hugged Pedro after scoring the winning goal.

Opening- Identify the Participle and the Word It Modifies. The mangled pair of sunglasses, bruised face, broken arm, and bleeding knees meant Dona had taken another spill on her mountain bike. Walking on the beach, Delores dodged jellyfish that had washed ashore. The water drained slowly in the pipe clogged with dog hair. Dylan's rudest habit is eating the last of the leftover pizza. Kayleen hates cooking because scraping burnt gook out of pans always undermines her enjoyment of the food.

Task- Create the following sentences. ½ Sheet of paper. Name, Date, Period. Create the four following sentences: Simple sentence with a participle. Compound sentence with a present participle. Complex sentence with a past participle. Compound sentence with a participle and an example of figurative language.

Closing: At the start of his journey, when Santiago asks a gypsy woman to interpret his dream about a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids, she asks for one tenth of the treasure in return. When Santiago asks the old man to show him the path to the treasure, the old man requests one tenth of his flock as "payment." Both payments represent a different price we have to pay to fulfill a dream; however, only one will yield a true result. Which payment represents false hope? Can you think of examples from your own life when you had to give up something to meet a goal and found the price too high? Identify two different participles you use in your answer. Circle them and identify the noun/pronoun there are modifying with an arrow.
