Learning Target ELAGSE8L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Explain the function of verbals (gerunds, participles, infinitives) in general and their function in particular sentences. Learning Target: Explain the function of participles in a sentence. Review- What is a gerund and how is it different from a participle?

Participles- Verbs ending in –ing or –ed that act as adjectives. Present Participle- end in –ing Past Participle- end in –ed Purpose- Modifier Stylistic choice to create images in a text. Present Participle- Amber, working on math in Language Arts, tried to hide her work from Mr. Brown. Past Participle- With swollen eyes, Jaime hugged Pedro after scoring the winning goal.

Opening- Identify the Participle and the Word It Modifies. The mangled pair of sunglasses, bruised face, broken arm, and bleeding knees meant Dona had taken another spill on her mountain bike.
