About Miss Summers *I am originally from Raleigh. I love everything about North Carolina! I attended undergrad at UNC-Wilmington…Go Seahawks! I majored in Elementary Education and minored in leadership studies. *This is my fifth year teaching! I started my career here at Carpenter teaching 4th grade. I moved to Savannah, Ga and taught 4th grade there for a year and a half. That’s when Carpenter called me home! I rejoined the Carpenter family this past January. I also started graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill in January, as well. I am earning my Masters in Elementary Administration.

Goals for the Year To give your child the academic and social skills needed to progress to 5th grade, and BEYOND! Prepare your child for the 21st Century through learning and practicing leadership skills, applying their learning to different careers, collaborating and communicating their ideas with others. To provide a supportive, fun and encouraging classroom environment, all while helping them become responsible, self-aware, and confident. To discover new interests and provide multiple opportunities to challenge your child. To encourage a LOVE of reading, inquiry and learning, that lasts a LIFETIME!

Classroom Mission Statement Miss Summers Class will be good friends to one another. We will be supportive, helpful and polite leaders. We will be like CARY! Someday, we will be able to make the world a better place by using the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Just a few things… The students are allowed in the building at 8:45 a.m. If your child is not in the classroom by the time the second bell rings (9:15), they will need to check in at the school office before coming to class. School starts at 9:15 a.m. Check this out… If your child arrives (and gets to work!) at 8:45 everyday this year, they will receive 5,400 minutes or 90 hours of extra education! If they arrive at 9:00, they will receive 2,700 minutes or 45 hours of extra education! WOW!

Just a few things continued… Please send in a note if your child’s transportation changes, otherwise they will have to go home using their regular transportation. Also if they are going to be picked up early, please send me an e-mail so I can ensure they will be ready for you. PTA Sign-up http://www.carpenterpta.net/ Birthdays: store bought goodies ONLY – preferably something easy to eat, and with as little sugar as possible! Medication: prescribed medicine only (includes cough drops and chap stick)

Snack and Recess Please pack your child a quick and healthy snack each day. We have the last lunch-so our learners have to go a while without eating! We have snack at 10:45 every day. They only need something quick and healthy (not a second lunch ) Due to the heat, we have switched our recess time. When the index or wind-chill is above/below a certain temperature, we are required to give indoor recess. We utilize GONOODLE to ensure the students are still receiving physical activity (Sharpening the saw!)

PBIS and The 7 Habits “PBIS is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students. ” pbis.org We are also studying the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Dr. Stephen Covey. We want to empower and prepare our students for a future that we cannot predict. These habits help students take control of their learning and their future. This content will be integrated into everything we do! We will have a twenty minute “Leader Lesson” every Friday, which will allow students to explore and apply the 7 Habits to deeper level.

The Core of 4th Grade Reading: Taking charge as a reader, deepening understanding of characters in fiction texts, understanding non-fiction text structures, research, exploring historical fiction, social issues Math: Place value, multiplication & division strategies, operations in algebra, geometry, fractions, measurement Writing: Personal and imaginative Narratives, informational research, persuasive and opinion Social Studies: North Carolina Science: Rocks & minerals, landforms, magnetism & electricity, animal studies

Homework Monday - Thursday Reading: Chapter books for stamina! 30 minutes EVERY NIGHT! Math: Should be using their notebooks EVERY NIGHT! Keep an “open math mind!” Please visit our class website to links for homework help! Homework should take 50 minutes including Math and Reading. If it is taking longer than that please let me know.

100 Book Challenge The 100 book challenge is an exciting way to motivate your child to read more! They have the whole year to read 100 books. They have to read 15 of a certain type of book (biography, poems, non-fiction, chapter books). The rest they can pick! There are different levels to celebrate different milestones during the challenge (bronze, silver, gold and platinum). Books must be read at home. This is optional 

Quarterly Projects Each quarter, students will have a reading project that they will work on at home. The project will relate to the content we are studying in reading that quarter. 1st Quarter-Fictional Response Mobile Project 2nd Quarter-Non-Fiction Report 3rd Quarter-Historical Fiction project 4th Quarter- Animal Habit Poetry/Research Project

Tenmarks Tenmarks is a differentiated math program. Students are assigned work for them to complete based on their needs in math (support and enrichment). Students are able to take hints to help them along! Students can see their progress and reports at anytime (so can you!). Students should be spending at least ten minutes on each assignment—if they are showing their work 

Leadership Notebooks Students are keeping track of their mission statement, WIGS, important learning objectives, celebrations and leadership opportunities in this notebook. Students utilize this notebooks daily! We will use these notebooks during Student led conferences.

Student Led Conferences This year, 4th grade will host two student led conference nights. What are student led conferences? -This year, we are focusing on student empowerment. Students have set personal goals and are in the process of setting academic goals. They are tracking their grades and progress throughout the content areas. Student led conferences are a great way for students to share with you how they are doing, what they are proud of, and areas they want to focus on.
