Generating Public Support How was the American Revolution Created?

Journal Entry Think of an issue: How would you generate public support to entice people to join a cause? (winning people’s hearts and minds)

Paul Revere Patrick Henry Thomas Paine

5 March 1770

Making Sense of Common Sense by Thomas Paine

How did Common Sense help the cause? Bridge the gap between the common people and the elite Shifted public opinion toward independence

A Mercantilism does not benefit the colonies “I have heard it said, that America has flourished under her connection to England – the same connection is necessary towards its future happiness. Nothing can be more false than this kind of argument.” Mercantilism does not benefit the colonies

B “We have had the protection of England – she did not protect us from our enemies on our account, but from her enemies on her own account – without England we would be at peace with France and Spain.” Our connection w/ England has brought us into war with other countries

C Monarchy/king is a poor form of government Law should rule not kings “England is the parent country, say some. Then the more shame upon her conduct. Even brutes do not make war upon their families – in a free country the law ought to be king and there ought to be no other” Monarchy/king is a poor form of government Law should rule not kings

D A peaceful solution cannot be reached “Nothing but independence can keep peace – a government of our own is our natural right – the last cord has been broken – there are injuries which we cannot forgive” A peaceful solution cannot be reached

E “There is something absurd in supposing a continent to be governed by an island.” It’s dumb to be governed by a small island 3,000 miles away

L. W. T. E. Create an outline for an essay that answers the following question: How does Paul Revere’s Bloody Massacre picture, Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech, and Thomas Paine’s Common Sense generate support for the idea of an American Revolution?

Create a thesis statement What will you prove? Take the question and turn it into a statement Paul Revere’s picture of the Bloody Massacre , Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech, and Thomas Paine’s Common Sense generated support for the idea of an American Revolution.

Write a topic sentence for each paragraph (there will be 3) Topic Sentence explain what the paragraph is about? Make a list of the supporting facts/evidence

Model (note there may be more than 3 supporting facts) Thesis Statement: 1st Topic Sentence: * 2nd Topic Sentence: 3rd Topic Sentence:
