Ch 6.3 Periodic Trends
Periodic Trends Atomic radius: radius of the atom R
Atomic Radius Trend: excluding the noble gases and d/f blocks, all elements follow same trend.
Learning Check Decide with your group which element has the larger atomic radius. F or O O 2. N or Si Si 3. Cl or Br Br 4. Be or Li Li 5. Ca or Rb Rb 6. Ba or Fr Fr 7. C or B B
Ionization Energy: energy required to remove an electron Ionization Energy: energy required to remove an electron. (hold on to their electrons) Note: noble gases are included Ionization Energy
Electronegativity: the ability of an atom to attract an electron Electronegativity: the ability of an atom to attract an electron. (stealing electrons) NOTE: noble gases are not included Electronegativity
Atomic Radius Electronegativity and Ionization Energy
Ionization Energy (IE) and Electronegativity IE and Electronegativity have the SAME trend. Be sure to draw it on the small periodic tables that were handed out. Easy way to remember IE and electronegativity. F is for frantic Finn. He’s hyper so has high numbers (IE and electronegativity) and loses weight (smallest atomic radius). Fr is for fat Franny. She’s lazy so has low numbers (IE and electronegativity) and never moves (largest atomic radius).
Learning Check Which element has the higher IE (ability to hold on to e-) and electronegativity (ability to steal e-). 1. Br or Sn Br 2. Ca or K Ca 3. F or O F 4. Cl or I Cl 5. P or Ge P 6. C or B C 7. Al or Na Al
