Third Grade Curriculum Night Mrs. Halron, Ms. McCormick, Mrs. Olson, Ms. Seger, & Mrs. Usher

How Students are Expected to “Think Deeply” and Respond After learning about the various regions of Georgia, students might be expected to explain why crops would grow better in the piedmont versus the coastal plains. After solving a multi-step math equation, students may be required to explain their work process. Study the picture shown. Using inferencing, explain how you think the boy is feeling and why.

How Will Students be Assessed on the GSE? The GSE encourage a wider variety of assessments such as … Traditional Assessments pen and paper tests with multiple choice. Short Response: Demonstrating deeper thinking, use evidence from text to support response Extended Response: Demonstrating comprehension & correct grammar application

A Peek into Reading Instruction Students will be expected to … actively participate in short whole group lessons & read-alouds, work independently to achieve unique reading goals & objectives, come prepared to work & share with their small guided reading group, and work effectively with partners or small groups to practice & master GA Reading Standards of Excellence.

A Day in Writing & Grammar We will be working on writing through the workshop model. This allows for more choice in writing, flexibility in the time needed to complete written works, and opportunities for students to receive small group and individualized instruction. We will be using Mentor Texts to identify outstanding skills authors use and incorporate those into our own writing. We will be using Mentor Sentences to identify remarkable use of grammar skills and sentence variety in our writing. Spelling/phonics words/patterns will be given and tested weekly.

A Peek into Math Instruction Students are provided instruction in the whole group as well as small leveled groups Stations and independent work could include technology, performance tasks, STEAM, cooperative responses, and cooperative activities. Interactive notebooks and study guides are used Students need to be on task and actively participate in class discussions

Constructed Response There were three boxes of fruit at the farmer’s market. The oranges were $4 a box. The apples were $6 a box, and the peaches were $7 a box. My mom thought that it would be least expensive to buy three boxes of peaches. My dad thought it would be least expensive to buy five boxes or oranges. My sister thought it would be least expensive to buy four boxes of apples. Who is right? _____________________________________________

Homework Policy Why Homework? Homework Expectations: Practice makes perfect! Students learn responsibility, pride & ownership. Homework Expectations: Will be posted on the website with the due date listed Homework should be done neatly and with care.

Behavior Policy School Wide: PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) Mustangs ROCK Respectful On Task Concerned Citizens Kind

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Positive Behavior A school-wide discipline plan, made up of staff members, that encourages positive student interactions and specifically teaches appropriate school behaviors. Intervention and Supports Each teacher has their own classroom management system to deal with minor disruptive behaviors. Repetitive disruptive behaviors will be referred to the P.B.I.S. committee through a student action plan. The committee will review the referrals and provide the teacher with supports and strategies to use within the classroom. More serious behavior discipline issues will be referred to the Assistant Principal.

P.B.I.S. Information Students are rewarded with scratchers when staff and teachers see students taking part in positive behavior. Students can earn these anywhere in the building. If a student is continually repeating negative behaviors that take away from instructional time, that student will receive a P.B.I.S. referral. P.B.I.S. referrals will be sent home to make parents aware. After a student receives four referrals, a letter will be sent home from the P.B.I.S. team.
