Sun Wukong - the Monkey King Lesson 7B: Ways of Thinking and Living in China

Sun Wukong – the Monkey King Perhaps the best known character in all Chinese literature is Sun Wukong - the Monkey King. “Monkey” was born out of a stone egg. He was very clever and learned many magical powers. But he was also very mischievous and caused lots of trouble wherever he went, including for the supreme being in Chinese tradition - the Jade Emperor in heaven.

Monkey causes trouble in heaven Watch the story of the Monkey King Read the story Monkey causes trouble in heaven Read the story Monkey causes trouble in heaven: pp4-5 of British Council pack https://schoolsonline.britishcouncil.org/classroom-resources/list/year-monkey The Jade Emperor - the supreme being in Chinese mythology

Monkey causes trouble in heaven What did you like about the story? How would you describe the character of the Monkey King? Three Step Interview

Monkey causes trouble in heaven The Monkey King is like an early comic strip superhero. He is very strong, a skilled fighter, a shapeshifter (he can turn into other animals and objects), he can ride on clouds and use spells to control the wind and water. Does he remind you of any other superheroes? How? Discuss

Monkey causes trouble in heaven Re-read Monkey causes trouble in heaven with your partner (read alternate paragraphs) Together highlight six key moments in the story and then retell as a comic strip Give children copies (one between two) of Monkey Causes Trouble in Heaven
