Physics Syllabus V. Hassells Online website: will provide links to required readings, virtual simulations, videos, PPTs, surveys, class schedules, etc… surveys

Course Overview: Welcome! I am looking forward to an exciting year, covering material and using methods that will challenge you to learn, and apply conceptual physics, conduct your own research and present your findings in class. This course covers topics including: Mechanics energy sound light magnetism electricity astronomy radioactivity

Materials for class: white board markers. A white (or light colored) 3 ring binder with plastic cover, loose leaf paper, composition book (lab notebook), pen/pencil,

Class Rules You must try. Do not disturb class. Positive Consequences: One free homework pass for one homework assignment every 2 weeks without infractions. Negative discipline 1 st offence: Visit with me 15 minutes at lunch, or Dont show up- and it is sent to SSC or SSC /call home 2 nd offence: SSC/school detention- (before/after school or lunch)

Method of Instruction: The class format is based on directed instruction. Students are encouraged to relate the material being covered to concepts and information that they already know. Study assistance materials such as note outlines or study sheets may be used with some topics. The student should not hesitate to ask necessary questions pertaining to discussion material covered in class.

General Expectations: You will do homework, complete tasks on time and study to earn the best grade you can make. You will turn in your own work. Plagiarism or cheating of any kind, on any work, is an automatic zero. You will be respectful at all times: If you think that there is something wrong with your grade, ask politely (at the end of class). Respect your classmates, yourself and me by listening and participating during class. You will follow school rules as outlined in the RHS student handbook. You will be Prepared and use only blue/black ink (or pencil) on papers to be graded. Different colors may be used on your notes only.

General Expectations: You will need to be able to apply what you are learning. Definitions will not be word for word. The teachers desk area, access to shelves and cabinets and the materials in them are prohibited unless instructed otherwise. Your materials/books left in the classroom are your responsibility if lost. Do not leave books or other materials behind in the classroom. I reserve the right to move anyone at anytime, without explanation. Red Cards may be used at any time to remove a student if they will not try or are disruptive.

Grades Grades are weighted with test counting 60 %; Labs 25%; Class/Homework 15 % before semester exams. Quizzes: Pop quizzes are open notes, yours not someone elses or the book! BOE assessments will help determine proficiency in science for graduation SSC/teacher detentions will be assigned for work not turned in on time (according to school policy). Tests are scheduled depending on student comprehension. Due to this fact, it is not possible to set up a reliable date/test schedule at the beginning of the year.

Tutoring: Wednesday lunch and from 3:35-4:00 or by appointment (check with me for before/after school or lunch times).

Makeup assignments IT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO ASK FOR MAKE UP WORK UPON RETURN FROM AN ABSENCE OF ANY KIND. Tests may be made up at lunch by appointment. The student is allowed the same number of days he/she is absent to turn in make-up test or other work. Progress reports will indicate missing work that must be turned in for credit. If you are present the day of a test, you are required to take the test. If you had an excused absence, you may retake it within the following week. The higher of the two grades will count. Homework not ready at the beginning of class is considered late. Students are required to pass a basic lab safety test before conducting lab work.
