Close Analysis What do you notice about the language of this chapter? What kind of language does he use and what effects does it have? Find an example in the text to support your answer. What is the effect of talking so much about Kirtz without showing him to the reader? Consider Marlow’s response to the cannibals under his control. What does he mean by the “remote kinship” he feels? How is Marlow’s response to the cannibals both typical and atypical of the other Europeans in the story? Find a description of the fog that appears as Marlow approaches Central Station.
