Chapter 4 : Lesson 2 Population Geography

Essential Question What factors influence population growth?

Population Pyramid- a diagram that shows the distribution of a population by age and gender

Birth Rate — number of births per year for every 1000 people . Death Rate – number of deaths per year for every 1000 people

World Population More than 7 billion people now live on Earth

Population density — the average number of people living on a square mile of land

Doubling Time: the number of years it takes for the population to double in size

Population density varies widely from country to country. Canada, with a low population density of about 10 people per square mile, offers wide-open spaces and the choice of living in thriving cities or quiet rural areas. In contrast, Bangladesh has one of the highest population densities in the world– about 3,227 people per square mile.

Demographic transition – the model that uses birthrates and death rates to show how populations in countries change over time

Negative Population Growth In the late 1900’s, some countries in Europe began to experience negative population growth, in which the annual death rate exceeds the annual birthrate

“As Nations become richer, population growth stabilizes..” With a partner create a list of solutions for ways to address the overpopulation issue in Zambia

Migration: the movement of people from place to place
