The Protestant Reformation

Protestant Reformation

Protestant = Christian, but not Catholic reform = change

Review Remember, since the time of Jesus, the Catholic Church was really the only Christian religion in existence

Review While many Christians did not agree with everything the Catholic Church did, they kept quiet for the most part Why? Fear Until…………………..

Martin Luther from Germany born in 1483 was a Catholic Priest

Martin Luther’s Beliefs Catholic Church was corrupt (worried more about money than religion) indulgences - certificate that could be bought to forgive sins Catholic Church did not focus enough attention on the Bible

Martin Luther’s Beliefs justification by faith - faith in Jesus is the only requirement to be saved (go to Heaven) the Catholic Church taught a person needed faith AND “works” (special acts of goodness/following church rules)

Martin Luther October 31, 1517, Luther posts 95 Theses (statements) on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany criticizing the Catholic Church with the help of the printing press, Luther’s ideas spread rapidly, and many join the Lutheran movement

John Calvin, Henry VIII, and others create their own Protestant Religions

The Catholic Reformation aka “The Counter-Reformation”

Catholic Reformation Describes the actions taken by the Catholic Church in response to the Protestant Reformation

2 Big Goals: Get people who joined the Protestant movement to come back to the Catholic faith Make sure nobody else left the Catholic faith

How? reform (make changes) clarify their beliefs and teachings so people would understand them better

Council of Trent - 1545-1563 meeting of Catholic leaders to discuss Church reforms and clarify teachings

Council of Trent no more indulgences (stop abuses) teachings stay the same Eg: faith AND good works to get to Heaven

Ignatius of Loyola starts group called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) worked to spread Catholic ideas throughout the world (missionary)

Was it Successful? who in here is Protestant again? obviously, it was not 100% successful, but it did help the Catholic Church
