1st JPIC International Seminar Reality of Immigrants in USA / World Response to this Reality What can we do together? This afternoon Br. Brian and I want to share about the reality of Immigrants in the USA/World and how we tried to respond to this Reality. Then we want to ask “What can we do together for immigrants?

Human Migration is a Global Phenomenon The movement of people, both within a nation state and externally between countries, is a global and historic phenomenon. Migration is understood in terms of push and pull factors. Push factors are the factors of out-migration, such as the economic or social pressures that encourage or force people to emigrate. Pull factors are the factors of in-migration, such as the economic or social pressures that lead people to immigrate.

Migration occurs for a variety of reasons, which include but are not limited to: Conflict-Induced – forced to leave due to armed conflict, civil war, violence and persecution. Development-Induced – forced to move due to projects or policies ex: dams, roads, airports etc. Disaster-Induced – forced to move due to natural disasters, global climate change, or human made disasters. (www.forcedmigrgation.org)

Response: Corporate Stance on Immigration We commit to pray to educate ourselves and others to advocate to act and to serve immigrants One important response that both the SSpS and the SVD have done is made a Corporate Stance on Immigration in which we committed to pray, to educate ourselves and others; to advocate - to be the voice with them and to act and to serve immigrants.

SVD-SSpS-SSpSAP Joint Venture on Immigration In 2009 Br. Brian and I got together with other SVDs and SSpS in what we called a Joint Venture on Immigration. We also asked our Pink Sisters and they said yes -- with their prayer support. This Venture was and is a response to the situation of the immigrants.

In our response is being in a four-fold way or being held by four pillars: Education and awareness of oursevles and other; Advocacy, Prayers -- sending out energy; Action or service. We try to respond in an international context…

PRAYER – FIRST PILLAR Holy Hours and Prayer Service Petitions at the Eucharist Prayer for Immigrants and Immigration Prayer -- our First Pillar through Holy Hours -- our Sisters have at least four a week; prayer services, petitions and prayers for immigrants and immigration.
