Warm-Up 9/6 If you were settling in a new land far away from home and could only take three items with you, what would those items be and why? These must be single items, and may be from the 21st century.

European Exploration: The foundations of a Nation

The Rush To Explore: Renaissance- “rebirth” of culture in Europe! 15th – 17th centuries. ??? Motives 2. People looking for trade routes for GOLD (Trade Activity) 3. Competition among nations GLORY 4. Spread Religion GOD 5. Spread thought and ideas 6.Establish colonies-territories established or taken by a mother country.

Spanish Exploration: Conquistadors- early Spanish explorers Developed encomienda-large plantations Enslaved the Natives and Africans put to work!! Disease, malnutrition, and overwork of Natives. Built cities, set up governments, and established a class system. Catholic religion was brought with them. +

Food ran out quickly Local Indians offered no help-(slavery) No leader (Allyon died) Slave revolts-(Africans)

Spain continued… 1540- Hernando de Soto Led an expedition that crossed the Savannah River. Where? Stayed in SC for 2 weeks. (video) First European explorer to see the interior of the state! Looking for Gold! Why? Competition!

The French! Sailed down the St. Lawrence River. Looking for a Northwest Passage! Establishing colonies at Montreal and Quebec Traveled along the rivers, including the Mississippi. Claiming the Louisiana Territory French, naming it after their King. (Louis) French Fur trade was HUGE in the Midwest. Good relations with Natives

Early Settlements/French: Actions: 1562- Jean Ribault led a group of Huguenots (French Protestants) to America: Built Charlesfort in honor of King Charles IX of France (Parris Is.) Consequences: Ribault left to explore other areas but never returned-all the men but one left (Ruffin)… French tried again in Florida (Ft. Caroline) but failed due to Spanish attacks! (map)

Spanish try again: Actions: 1565- Spanish established St. Augustine- First permanent European settlement in what is now the United States 1566- Spanish built San Felipe (on the same place French built Charlesfort) Consequences: Indians attacked- fled to St. Aug. Spanish tried again on the same spot but were nice to the natives. (worked) Fort San Marcos Consequences: It failed because Sir Frances Drake burned it to the ground. Why?
