Treating Cardiovascular Diseases

Treating Cardiovascular Diseases Target: I will be able to describe treatments and preventions for cardiovascular diseases Detection of Cardiovascular Diseases: Electrocardiogram (EKG): A graph of the rhythm of the heart which detects a heart attack or abnormalities Pg. 65

Radionuclide Imaging: Injection of radionuclides into the blood which are followed through the blood vessels in the heart Determines if blood is flowing to the heart and how much damage has been done

Coronary Angiography: A catheter is thread through blood vessels from the groin to the heart, and dye is injected to show narrow or obstructed vessels

Troponin Levels: lab test measuring the troponin protein in the blood to diagnose a heart attack; elevated levels indicate heart damage has been done

Treatments for Cardiovascular Diseases: Artificial Pacemaker: Implant in the chest and wired to the heart to keep the heart at a regular beat

Coronary Bypass: Surgical procedure which created detours around obstructed or narrowed coronary arteries Uses a vein from the leg and grafts it onto the heart

Balloon Angioplasty: Surgical procedure which threads a balloon tipped catheter through the body to the site of the blockage The balloon is inflated and pushes plaque against the artery wall to open it

Heart Valve Surgery: Surgery required when a heart valve does not close properly or is too tight; so an artificial one is inserted

Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: 1. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs 2. Limit cholesterol in your diet and eat lots of fruit, veggies, and grains High cholesterol foods: eggs, liver, fish, fast food, butter, shellfish, shrimp, bacon, sausage, red meat, cheese, and pastries.

3. Limit salt intake 4. Maintain a healthy weight 5. Get plenty of physical activity (30 min-1 hour 4-5 days a week) 6. Manage stress in daily life Summary
