Castleside Primary School Links with the community to enrich Science outside the classroom
Summary of Content Castleside have taken the children out into the community to improve their surrounding area in an innovative, low cost way. They has also led to links with other curriculum areas such as citizenship and caring for the environment and how Science can help people and improve their lives.
What the school says It was a relatively low cost, high impact way of working together with the local community to improve an area close to the school grounds. It also reinforced children’s learning about life cycles and gardening.
What we did As part of a project with the local community, children from our school were taken to plant bulbs in the local graveyard. This added much needed colour and interest.
The impact for our school was ..... Some of the children involved hadn’t been to the graveyard before. It also gave us an opportunity to talk about citizenship and how we can improve our local environment.
Science Subject Leader Comments We only needed basic gardening equipment. Our bulbs were supplied free by our local council and parental contributions.
What we will do next It would be ideal if we could look to improve another local area by planting bulbs again.
