Presentation transcript:

Using your Verizon iPad Responsible student use

Key vocabulary Responsibility Wireless Data Streaming WiFi Ask students to share out definitions for each term.

Learning Intentions I will Understand responsibility related to my iPad Understand how to conserve wireless data

What does it mean to be responsible? Do now: Turn and talk to your partner for 3 minutes

You are expected to be responsible with your iPad Keep it secure Treat it gently Charge it each night Bring it to school each day Keep up with your own iPad (and don’t touch someone else’s) Report loss, damage, or theft to your parent and/or teacher immediately Visit approved sites only Use data responsibly

What are some things you can do on a device with a mobile plan? Browse the internet Watch a Video Send an email Download Content Stream music What else?

Data usage is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), or gigabytes (GB) rather than minutes. There are 1,024 KB in 1 MB and 1,024 MB in 1 GB.

ALERT: You have 5 gb to use every month on your Verizon ipad Ask students if this is a lot of data or a little. When data runs out, students must wait until it renews the next month.

How much data does it cost? Ask students to list the events from smallest cost to largest cost. Discuss budgeting of data.

TIP: In general, text files use relatively small amounts of data graphics and music files use larger amounts of data video files use very large amounts of data

What are some ways to make sure you don’t run out of data before the end of the month? Allow students time to provide answers such as: Use wi-fi to connect when you can (at school or other locations that have free public wi-fi such as libraries and restaurants) Limit the amount of large cost activity students engage in, such as streaming music or videos Check data usage to see how much they have used, and how much they have left to use.
