AVID is an in school academic support that prepares students to be college & career ready!

How does AVID fit into my schedule? 7th & 8th graders have 2 total electives 1 would be AVID: 1 Could be: Choir Band or Orchestra Theatre, Speech/Debate Foreign Language Computers Industrial Technology FACS Art Extra Notes: Depending on next year’s schedule, Students in AVID may Not be able to take Band, choir, or orchestra

What do we do in AVID? Planner Skills Time Management Skills Time management is a very important career readiness skill. We develop this skill through the use of our planners. In AVID, we get a planner at the beginning of the school year Time Management Skills What do we do in AVID? Planners help you stay organized with the work that you need to get done and make you more aware of upcoming projects, tests, & quizzes.

What do we do in AVID? Inquiry: AVID Class Tutorials The class is divided into small groups and assigned an AVID college tutor. Each group member brings a tutorial request form (TRF) with a question they don’t understand from a test, quiz, homework, or practice assignment. Each person presents their TRF to the group & the group guides the student presenter to better understand the problem by asking teacher-like guiding questions. What do we do in AVID? Group Tutorials Group Tutorials This process helps build self confidence, leadership, & critical thinking skills.

Where actions speak louder than words! Community Service AVID students develop leadership skills by participating in and seeking out activities that help our local community. Teacher Recommendations Once you turn in your application Your Teachers will be sent a recommendation form that they return to Mrs. Phillips.

Student Interview Interviews will be held in February You meet with Mrs. Phillips and another GMS AVID Site Team teacher for about 10-15 minutes so they can get to know you. it’s really not scary & there are no wrong answers to anything they ask
