10-16-17 Cambridge: “Meet a Scientist”

Do Now: Answer the following question What are the 3 types of scientific investigations? Observational Studies Comparative Studies Controlled Experiments What is one possible research question for each investigation? Observational Studies: “How tall is the average human? Comparative Studies: “On average, are males taller than females? Controlled Experiments: “Does calcium consumption have an affect on how tall animals grow?”

Assignment Review: Identifying Parts of an Experiment How Dependent Variable is Measured: Independent Variable: pH of water solution Record how many days it took for the beans to sprout Control Group: Constants pH 7 Size of cups Experimental Groups: Amount of soil pH 3, pH 9 Number of beans in each cup Dependent Variable: Same amount of water solution Germination rate Same window sill

Group Work: Meet the Scientist Lesson Objective: Students will be able to give examples of how scientists can gain scientific knowledge without experimentation Groups will be assigned a scientist to read about. After you read about the different scientists, answer questions about them in the “Meet a Scientist” worksheet. Then each group will share with the class a summary of their scientist's work and the methods they use in solving problems. You can do this by creating a drawing or acting it out.
