KEY CONCEPT Science is a way of thinking, questioning, and gathering evidence.

Like all science, biology is a process of inquiry. Scientists make careful observations and record them as data. Scientists form a hypothesis as a possible answer to a question. Scientists test their hypotheses and analyze their data.

Think, Pair and Share What are some observations that you or someone else have made?

Data Quantitative: involves quantity or numbers such as amount measurement, temperatures, etc. Qualitative: involves quality based on description (taste, smell, color, texture) requires use of senses.

Mix and Mingle Provide examples of quantitative and qualitative data

Biologists use experiments to test hypotheses. Observational studies allow scientists to describe a phenomenon.

Experiments allow scientists to test hypothesis

Experimental studies allow scientists to determine what causes a phenomenon. Independent variables are manipulated. Dependent variables are observed and measured. Constants are conditions that are kept the same. Control is something to compare results to.

A theory explains a wide range of observations. Theories explain a wide range of observations and experimental results. -supported by much evidence. -can change based on new info. -Not yet proven
