Properties of Water

Cohesion - attraction between water molecules (Water drop demo) - attraction between water molecules Why? Oxygen = (-) charge Hydrogen = (+) charge Opposites Attract

Surface Tension -the attraction of water molecules at the surface of a body of water ■ allows water to support objects (not float) ■ ex: water strider sits on surface Demo: paperclip

Adhesion Capillary Action- - attraction between a water molecule and another molecule of a different substance ex: water to leaf (penny demo) Cohesion/Adhesion in Action Capillary Action- -movement of water in a space due to cohesion and adhesion (paper towel demo) Review of Water Properties

HOW DO THE PROPERTIES OF WATER RELATE TO PLANTS? Transpiration- loss of water from the leaves of a plant Purpose- used to remove heat from plant, regulate internal temperature [like sweating for human] water movement in plants

WHY IS TRANSPIRATION IMPORTANT TO THE ECOSYSTEM?
