August 22, 2016 Welcome and Happy National Roller Coaster Day! Agenda Finish Young Goodman Brown Notes on Plot and theme Where the Wild Things Are Target: I can analyze a theme’s development over the course of a text.

Young Goodman Brown ACE The ACE paragraph here at Dunbar stands for Answer: answer the question. In this case, What message is Hawthorne trying to convey by showing a character go “into the wild”? Cite: Pick at least one piece of evidence from the four corners slot to use as evidence that your theme is correct. Explain: Explain how your citation answers the question.

Theme Development We have worked on creating a theme over the last couple of days. One more time. . . What is the theme formula? Now, we need more specific work on how that theme can be developed in a story. One of the first ways that this happens is in a story’s plot. So, let’s review plot:

Plot is the sequence of events in the story. Climax Rising Action Falling Action Resolution Exposition

During the exposition of the story, we are introduced to the characters, setting, and other background information. During the rising action, we discover the characters’ problems and complications.

The climax is the most exciting part of the plot… Or the highest point of suspense in the story! Or the point of no return!

During the falling action, the story winds down. During the resolution or dénouement, the conflict is resolved and the story usually has a conclusion.

Black Hole How does the plot of this short film support the following theme: Greed can become a destructive force if allowed to become overwhelming. Exposition: Rising Action: Climax: Falling Action/Resolution:

Where the Wild Things Are Today, I am going to give you the theme of the film you are about to see. I expect everyone to have cell phones off and heads up while we are watching film; I show films as examples of literature. We will examine how the plot supports the theme through the use of some guiding questions throughout the film. Answer as many of these as the film allows today. We will continue this film and worksheet next class.
