QUESTION 2 – 4/5 MINS EXAMPLE ANSWER In the text, the writer describes what Obed went through by using the phrase ‘Run up and down’ which suggests Obed was physically tested and had to be in good shape to become a miner.

IMPRESSIONS means the kind of view YOU might have of the place or person when you read what is said about them.

EXAMPLE IMPRESSIONS: HAPPY BRAVE SCARED COMPETITIVE NEGATIVE SELFISH

QUESTION 3 - IMPRESSIONS EXAMPLE ANSWER The main impression I get of the mines is that it’s dangerous. The workers were told ‘rocks could fall and crush’ them. The word ‘crush’ suggests the mines are violent and powerful and it could destroy the men if they were ‘careless’ in the mines.

QUESTION 4 – 13/15 MINS EXAMPLE ANSWER In the text, the writer makes the lines tense and dramatic by using the phrase ‘blasted’. This word (verb) makes it sound like Obed is in an explosive and dangerous situation.

START WITH I THINK/ I FEEL… SAY WHAT & WHY WORDS/PHRASES MADE YOU FEEL THAT WAY COMMENT ON HOW THE CHARACTER CHANGES IN THE EXTRACT What should you do? AGREE WITH THE QUESTION

Always agree – it’s easier to present an argument.

QUESTION 5 – 13/15 MINS EXAMPLE ANSWER I agree that the writer encourages the reader to feel sympathy for Obed with the phrase ‘I would be killed’ meaning Obed is in fear of his life.
