Classifying Governments

Unitary- All power is located in one place, little power in local government (United Kingdom) Federation- Strong central government, strong localized governments (United States) Confederation- Weak central government (United Arab Emirates) 1. Geographic Area

2. Structural Function Presidential- Executive elected separate from the legislative body. (United States) The United States is a Presidential structure because the President is elected separate from the Congress. The People elect the President The People elect The Congress

2. Structural Function (cont.) Parliamentary- Executive is elected from & by the legislative body. (United Kingdom) The UK is a parliamentary structure because the Prime Minister is elected from and by the Ministers of Parliament as their leader. People elect Parliament elect Prime Minister

3. Number of Decision Makers Anarchy- absence of a ruler, ruling class, political party or parties, or power elite. Self-rule Social harmony through voluntary cooperation. Political disorder & confusion

Decision Makers (cont.) Dictatorship- Rule by one person. This person usually takes power by force. A dictator is often a military leader. (Pakistan) Monarchy- Rule by one person or family. It is passed down from generation to generation. The ruler is known as King or Queen. (Jordan)
