Introduction to Documentaries

Today: Goals: Focus Questions: Students will be introduced to documentary films and probe the idea that filmmakers have a responsibility to represent the truth in their films. They will analyze clips from documentaries for evidence of subjectivity. How do we determine whether something contains objectivity and/or subjectivity? What is a documentary? What are the responsibilities of documentary filmmakers in regards to telling the truth?

Vocabulary Day 2 (Task 2) A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record.

Objectivity- the quality of being impartial, or neutral Vocabulary Day 7 (Task 2) Objectivity- the quality of being impartial, or neutral

Vocabulary Day 7 (Task 2) Subjectivity- the quality of being based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

Fiction vs. Nonfiction

Answer these questions: Why are fiction films more popular than nonfiction films? Do fiction films affect our perceptions about what is really happening in the world? What about nonfiction films? How “real” is the reality in a nonfiction film?
