Presentation transcript:

Learning Target: I can create an effective introduction for my research essay Do Now: Switch thesis statements with a partner. Assess the statement using the following checklist: Does the statement make a concise assertion about your topic? Is the assertion limited to only one idea? Is the assertion specific and significant? Does the statement at least imply your purpose? Is the statement unified so that the parts relate to each other?

The first thing to do is to “hook” your readers. To do this, use: A vivid scene An interesting detail A striking quotation A unique question

Next, provide the poem’s title and author and a brief summary of the meaning of the text and necessary background. Ground your reader in your essay!

Finally, end the introduction with the single-sentence thesis statement that you wrote earlier which includes your topic + opinion because reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3.

Briefly, here are the parts of the intro: Hook Title, author, summary Thesis

If you gained great power and wealth in your lifetime, what might you do to insure that you would be remembered for all time? Hook Title, author The poem “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley focuses on the remains of a powerful, egotistical ruler who had his likeness captured in a statue so that he might be always remembered. Yet a traveler hundreds of years later ironically discovers this statue broken and half buried in desert sand. Nothing else remains, suggesting that power and fame are fleeting and, no matter how conceited a person may be in his lifetime, death and time will reduce him to nothing. Summary of poem and its meaning Shelley’s poem can be better understood by examining his life, the historical time period, and the critics’ reactions. Thesis

Now it’s your turn… Use this time to construct your introduction paragraph. Remember to have at least 6 sentences and DO NOT QUOTE!!!!! Quotes are only used in your body paragraph to help prove your thesis!
