Reading & Reading Log Each student will be given a reading level (Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading). This level will be marked in their Binder and will be updated as they move to new levels. Reading Workshop: each student should be reading a book on their own level. We will conduct individual conferences with students to monitor this level, as well as strategy groups. Please make sure your child reads nightly.

A.R. Your child will be expected to take at least 2 A.R. tests each month on their reading level (Fountas & Pinnell) and pass with at least an 80%. You can check on their A.R. progress at home and you will get a letter explaining how to do this.

Writing Students will be writing daily during Writer’s Workshop. Genres: Narrative Opinion Informative/Explanatory

Math Please practice math facts nightly – even for just 5 minutes. Flash cards are old-fashioned, but a great way to practice quickly. There are many apps and computer games as well.

Spelling Students will be given a rule and practice words for the specific rule. These words are just practice words. The students are to learn the rule and are expected to apply it in any word that the rule is present. Red Words: Words that don’t follow any specific rule and need to be memorized. Red words will be tested at random, not just for that week.

Science/Social Studies Interactive Journals STEM Inquiry Design Model Anything we do in class will be in your child’s interactive journal and they will be assessed on it. As we begin a new unit of study, your child will bring home his/her Journal to start studying a little each night.

Homework & Agenda Homework will be assigned as needed All homework will be written in the Agenda and stamped by us. Please sign Agendas each night.

Report Cards & Grading Report cards are sent home 4 times this school year – every 9 weeks. 3+ Exceeds standards – makes applications & inferences beyond expectations 3 Meets standards - consistently & independently 2 Progressing towards meeting standards 1 Limited progress or does not meet standards
