STEWARDS AFTER EDEN Lesson 5 for February 3, 2018

A steward is a person employed to manage another’s property. Adam and Eve were stewards of God in Eden. They were responsible for taking care and enjoying a perfect world. Then sin entered Earth and the world changed, but we’re still stewards. This week we studied the Biblical concept of stewardship, especially our role as stewards of the spiritual goods God has given us. Stewards in the Old Testament Stewards of material goods Stewards in the New Testament Faithful and unfaithful stewards Stewards of the mysteries of God Stewards of spiritual truth Stewards today Our responsibility as stewards

STEWARDS OF MATERIAL GOODS “So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.” (Genesis 39:4) In the Old Testament, stewards were those in charge of “the house.” They managed the goods of their masters, and their masters trusted them. Stewards acted in the name of their master, doing what he’d do. They embraced their master’s interests, and they didn’t use his goods for their own benefit. There were faithful stewards like Eliezer and Joseph (Gn. 15:2; 39:4), and unfaithful ones like Arza and Shebna (1K. 16:9; Is. 22:15-21). Shebna’s tomb (British Museum) Shebna used his position as steward to advance his personal interests by building a luxurious tomb on the Mount of Olives. He was dismissed.

FAITHFUL AND UNFAITHFUL STEWARDS “So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’” (Luke 16:2) “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.” (Luke 12:43) The New Testament focus is on the responsibility of the steward. Every steward is held accountable by his master. Unfaithful stewards are punished (Luke 12:45-47), but they can still avoid spiritual decline (Luke 16:8). Faithful stewards are praised, and they’re given bigger responsibilities (Luke 19:17). We must use our gifts responsibly while waiting for the coming of Jesus (Luke 12:37-38).

STEWARDS OF THE MYSTERIES OF GOD “meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains.” (Colossians 4:3) God has revealed many truths, but there are some He has not, because we cannot understand them (Deuteronomy 29:29). There are other revelations we only understand partially. Those truths are “mysteries.” God has revealed some mysteries that were not understood before (for example, preaching to the Gentiles). We are stewards of those mysteries. We must share them with others even if we don’t understand them fully.

What are some of the mysteries God revealed in the New Testament? The blindness of Israel (Romans 11:25) The wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 2:7) The transformation of our bodies (1 Corinthians 15:51) All things gathered together in Christ (Ephesians 1:9-10) Preaching the Gospel to the Gentiles (Ephesians 3:3-6) Marriage and the Church as Christ’s bride (Ephesians 5:31-32) The Gospel (Ephesians 6:19) The Father and Jesus being one (Colossians 2:2) What the Antichrist does (2 Thessalonians 2:7) The great truths of faith (1 Timothy 3:9) Jesus’ incarnation, death and resurrection (1 Timothy 3:16)

STEWARDS OF SPIRITUAL TRUTH “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV) Truth Righteousness Gospel Faith Salvation Bible Spiritual truths are gifts that God has given us for our own benefit. We are also stewards of them. The most valuable gift is redemption. Wouldn’t you share such a great gift, so others can receive it too? Think about the armor of God. Each part of that armor is a spiritual gift God has given us, and we are stewards of those gifts (Ephesians 6:13-17).

OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS STEWARDS “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10) OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS STEWARDS Being a steward is a big responsibility. Stewards must manage many resources to get the greatest profit for their master. Therefore, we are responsible for everything God has given us. That includes material and spiritual gifts. We are free to use our resources for our own benefit or for God’s benefit. We must remember that we’ll be held accountable (Ecclesiastes 11:9). We’ve been called to be faithful stewards of all the goods of our Master.

“The moment a man loses sight of the fact that his capabilities and possessions are the Lord’s, that moment he is embezzling his Lord’s goods. He is acting the part of an unjust steward, provoking the Lord to transfer His goods to more faithful hands. God calls upon those to whom He has entrusted His goods to handle them faithfully, to show to the world that they are laboring for the salvation of sinners. He calls upon those who profess to be under His supervision not to misrepresent Him in character.... He daily loadeth us with benefits.... Let us glorify Him by imparting to others the abundance He has bestowed upon us.” E.G.W. (In Heavenly Places, October 22)
