Research Questions

What is a research question? It guides your research once you have decided on your HiA theme and topic Example: Theme 1 Networks of Life; topic- endangered species Note: the goal is one theme, one topic, and one research question, but you likely won’t start with that

A Good Research Question Is appropriately complex Has more than one possible answer Cannot be answered with a yes or no Defines specific parameters of inquiry Does not favor a particular answer/ is not biased

PICO Method This method is best if you want your question to involve whether a solution will have the effect you want. Population- addressing a specific population, its important characteristics and demographic information. Intervention- the intervention can be a treatment, procedure, diagnostic test, and risk or prognostic factors. Comparison- when a new therapy is compared with the existing one. Outcome- is the effect of the intervention.

Most often used in the medical community, but is adaptable. PICO Most often used in the medical community, but is adaptable. Example question: Do community colleges (P) with on-campus food pantries (I) have different student outcomes (O) than colleges without them (C)?

Sub-questions Use “inquiry words” to develop sub-questions that will help you answer your overall research question Why How Could Should
