BELLWORK 8-17-17 Consider objects in the classroom, materials from home, and items used in your daily activities. List five items that have something to do with Chemistry
MATTER AND CHANGE OBJECTIVES: 1. Define Chemistry 2. List examples of the branches of chemistry. 3. Compare and contrast basic, applied, and technological research development.
What is Chemistry Chemistry is the scientific study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. 6 Branches of chemistry include: Organic chemistry Biochemistry Inorganic chemistry Physical Chemistry Analytical Chemistry Theoretical Chemistry Approaches to the study of chemistry include: Physical chemistry Analytical chemistry Theoretical chemistry
Organic Chemistry The study of compounds that contain carbon.
Biochemistry The study of substances and processes occurring in living things.
The study of non-organic substances. Inorganic Chemistry The study of non-organic substances.
Physical Chemistry The study of the properties and changes of matter and how they relate to energy.
Analytical Chemistry The identification of the components and composition of materials.
Theoretical Chemistry The use of math and computers to understand chemical behavior.
Chemicals A chemical is any substance that has a definite composition. Common chemicals in your kitchen are sucrose (C12H22O11), sodium chloride (NaCl, salt), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3, baking soda), and vanillin (C8H5O3, which gives vanilla its flavor). These chemicals always have the same composition which is represented by their formulas.
Types of Research Research can be categorized as basic, applied, or related to technological development.
Basic Research Research that is carried out for the sake of increasing knowledge.
Applied Research Research that is carried out to solve a problem.
Technological Research Technological development involves the use of technology to improve our quality of life. Ex: computers, biodegradable materials.
