Science Vocabulary 3 Week 5-6

Interference The combination of two or more waves that exist in the same place at the same time

absorption When incoming light hits an object it causes its atoms to vibrate. It then converts the energy into heat which is radiated.

cornea  allows for the passage of light into the eye and it also focuses the light

electromagnetic wave a wave that consists of electric and magnetic fields and doesn't require a medium to exist.

emit  Give off, send forth, or discharge; as of light, heat, or radiation, sound, etc.

iris The part of the eye which has color. Controls the amount of light entering the eye.

lens allows us to see objects near and far

light A form of energy that travels as waves from the sun to Earth.

optic nerve   transmits electrical signals from retina to the brain.

optical illusions   1.  something that deceives the eye by appearing to be other than it is.  2.  Pictures that fool the eye by making what is real look different.

pupil black hole in iris, where light enters eye.

reflection Occurs when light waves or sound waves bounce off of an object.

refraction  is the change in direction of a wave when it changes speed as it travels from one material(medium) to another.

retina converts light waves to electrical signals

scattering an interaction of light with matter that causes light to change direction.

transmission Occurs when light waves pass through an object without interacting.

transverse Waves that moves at right angles to the direction in which the waves are traveling.

visible A part of the electromagnetic radiation that you can see with your eyes.
