Third Grade Newsletter GIFTED GAZETTE 3.6 Feb. 5th - Feb. 9th What we’re learning this week… Test Schedule ***Students will take a “mock” LEAP test this week to help drive instruction and enrichment groups leading up to the real test in late April. Please help us by making sure your child eats a good breakfast, brings a healthy snack, and is on time for school.*** Reading: This week we will… read Because of Winn Dixie concentrate on the skills of theme and sequencing read self-selected novels about friendship in Literature Circles Language/Writing/Vocabulary: This week we will… research inventions of African Americans and write about how those inventions have influenced our lives. (a few students will be selected to read their essays on morning announcements in February:) Spelling: utilize dictionary/thesaurus/dictionary.com references and refer to list of “non-negotiable” words in writing portfolio Math: This week we will… complete pizza fraction project (graded in-class) Math Superstars enrichment master 1-12’s facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test: 25 correct facts in 1 minute, 40 seconds Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: “Friendship Interview” Project is due Thursday 2/8. Students who have turned in summaries will present to the class at the end of this week, all others will present the week we return from break. Reading: Graded Classwork Reading Comprehension on Friday. Orange Vocabulary Workshop: None this week. Language: Interview Project is graded this week Spelling: Assessed through writing. Students are expected to consult dictionaries, peer editors, computer resources, and “non-negotiable” words to monitor spelling when writing. Math: Graded Pizza Fractions Project SOME outside work may be needed. Please study multiplication facts nightly, especially if your child is not fluent with 1-12 multiplication facts (3- second rule). Try using mathfactspro.com or mathfactscafe.com for nightly fluency practice. Feb. 8~ PES Parade-starts at 1:30pm Feb. 12-16~ Mardi Gras Holiday A note from the teachers This month starts a new challenge with Moby Max! Let’s do our best to see who will make the LEADERBOARD!
