The Upper Albemarle is Accessible By Auto The Upper Albemarle is a four- hour drive from the Nation’s Capital. It is no more than a one-day’s drive for 40% of the U.S. population. By Boat Boaters on the ICW can cruise into the Upper Albemarle. By Aircraft Edenton Municipal Airport (EDE) has 6,000-foot paved runway and an Instrument Landing System. By Rail Chesapeake & Albemarle RR has track out of Norfolk into Edenton. Upper Albemarle Albemarle Sound is a large inland body of generally fresh water in northeastern North Carolina. It is 55 miles long, oriented east to west, and is from 3.5 to 14 miles wide. Relatively shallow and tideless, Albemarle Sound is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the North Carolina Outer Banks. Albemarle Sound is a vital link in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Inland canals – including the Dismal Swamp Canal, which was surveyed by George Washington – connect the Sound with Chesapeake Bay. The Chowan and Roanoke Rivers are the largest of the many rivers and streams flowing into Albemarle Sound. March 2012 Overview of the Upper Albemarle
