Acc. Coordinate Algebra / Geometry A Day 30 Agenda: Warm – Ups Notes on Function Notation and Evaluating Functions Learning Target: Students can evaluate functions in function notation.

Function Notation

Function form of an equation A way to name a function f(x) is a fancy way of writing “y” in an equation. Pronounced “f of x”

Evaluating Functions

Tell me what you get when x is -2. 1. Evaluating a function Tell me what you get when x is -2. f(x) = 2x – 3 when x = -2 f(-2) = 2(-2) – 3 f(-2) = - 4 – 3 f(-2) = - 7

Tell me what you get when x is 3. 2. Evaluating a function Tell me what you get when x is 3. f(x) = 32(2)x when x = 3 f(3) = 32(2)3 f(3) = 256

Tell me what you get when x is -3. 3. Evaluating a function Tell me what you get when x is -3. f(x) = x2 – 2x + 3 find f(-3) f(-3) = (-3)2 – 2(-3) + 3 f(-3) = 9 + 6 + 3 f(-3) = 18

Tell me what you get when x is 3. 4. Evaluating a function Tell me what you get when x is 3. f(x) = 3x + 1 find f(3) f(3) = 33 + 1 f(3) = 28

Find f(6). Find g(-1). Given r(x) = 2x – 1, evaluate the domain {0, 1, 2, 3}. What is the range of r(x)? 4 3 Range: {-1, 1, 3, 5}

Homework/Classwork Review your answers from the Function Practice Worksheet and make any needed corrections.
