Eighth Annual Emsi Conference September 12, 2018 Tracking Labor Market Outcomes at Northeastern University: Applications of the Alumni Insight Database Eighth Annual Emsi Conference September 12, 2018

Why Did Northeastern Decide to Purchase Alumni Insight? A few challenges and questions we continually grapple with: Industry Alignment: Do our degree programs align with current job market trends? ..What occupations are our programs preparing graduates for? Industry Engagement: Which employers should Northeastern target for partnership? ..Which employer prospect might have an affinity for Northeastern? Geographic Expansion: Which programs should we offer on our regional campuses? ..How can we showcase successful career outcomes of our graduates to regulators?

How Did the Data Match Process Work? In September of 2017, our team collaborated with University Decision Support and the Office of Alumni Relations to submit a list of Northeastern alumni who graduated between AY 2009-AY 2016 with info such as date of birth and student IDs. The Emsi team used this list to query its database of professional profiles and to provide Northeastern with a data set of verified alumni information. 50,890 alumni records were submitted to Emsi Alumni Insight, and 32,665 records were sent back (64% match rate). Highest match rate thus far for Emsi. Records not returned include: Those where alumni did not create a searchable online profile Those where the record simply could not be found Worker profiles in this dataset include details of alumni’s most recent position. Our analysis did not include historical employment data, though additional analyses on historical employment may be conducted in the future (we plan to repeat the match process this year). Recent position details include: Employer company Industry (aligned with U.S. census North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes) Occupation (aligned with Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes) Alumni-reported job title Length of employment in current role Program of study (aligned with NCES IPEDS CIP Codes)

8/28/2014 Tableau Dashboard Available to Organization on our Tableau Server Site to Allow Users to Segment the Emsi Alumni Match Data by Program or Another Variable of Interest Conversion Rate = Percentage of Leads who have Applied as of August 2014; Yield Rate = Percentage of Admits Enrolled

What Are Opportunities for Further Analysis and Use Cases? Further analysis can be conducted by appending historical student data, historical alumni data, and alumni survey data to this dataset to better understand alumni employment history and how student background might impact career paths. Northeastern plans to repeat the data match this fall. Potential use cases for the Alumni Insight portal data and match data could include, but are not limited to: Identifying employer contacts to support industry engagement Identifying metro areas with high concentrations of alumni, to inform locations for alumni networking events and outreach, as well as potential regions for campus expansion Developing a better understanding of workers in various occupations and industries to inform new program development and curriculum adjustments. Showcasing the types of career pathways associated with various degrees Determining key competitors in certain fields Measuring if programs successfully prepare alumni to succeed given programs’ stated outcomes. Determining if alumni self-report the skillsets programs were designed to equip students with Providing regulators with outcomes information in the programmatic approval process Identifying and sourcing faculty/instructors with a particular skill set or expertise Identifying alumni success stories for marketing and promotional materials
