Exploring how to tell the truth and preserve hope: can a balance between communication and empathy be calculated?  Amnon Sonnenberg  Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology  Volume 2, Issue 6, Pages 518-522 (June 2004) DOI: 10.1016/S1542-3565(04)00172-7

Figure 1 (A) Negative influence of truth on hope as described by the equation H = 1 − cT. A greater impact of truth on hope is associated with a larger c-value and a steeper decline. (B) Indifference curves of hope plotted versus truth. Larger utility values are associated with curves shifted toward the right upper corner. For illustrative purposes, the axes are drawn between 0% and 200%, although both preferences are defined only between 0% and 100%. Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology 2004 2, 518-522DOI: (10.1016/S1542-3565(04)00172-7)

Figure 2 The optimal choice among various combinations of hope and truth corresponds with the point at which the inverse hope-truth line meets an indifference curve. A lesser impact of truth on hope is associated with a smoother decline of the hope-truth line, shifting its meeting point with the indifference curves rightward and resulting in more truth. Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology 2004 2, 518-522DOI: (10.1016/S1542-3565(04)00172-7)
