Welcome to Advanced Placement Information Meeting! Gaithersburg High School 2018 - 2019

Gaithersburg High School VISION: Gaithersburg High School expects academic excellence, embraces diversity, and fosters respect and responsibility for all students. MISSION: Gaithersburg High School promotes success for every student by providing an effective instructional program and educational partnerships. In a mutually respectful environment, we celebrate diversity, encourage effort, and support students. Students pursue rigorous academic opportunities to maximize potential and become self-sustaining members of society. We endorse the idea that the pursuit of excellence is fundamental and eternal. CORE VALUES: Gaithersburg High School believes in and promotes the core values of MCPS and believes every student can succeed. At Gaithersburg High School, we value learning, relationships, respect, excellence, and equity at a high and consistent level.

“…expects academic excellence…promotes success for every student by providing an effective instructional program” We are making concerted efforts to have our students enroll in rigorous courses (Advanced Placement [AP] classes). We are working with the feeder schools (ES and MS) to encourage students to begin challenging themselves in high school. We are an Equal Opportunity School (EOS). - 1,685 in AP classes (~68%)* 975 1st timers (60%* & 39%) - 385 White/Asian (77%) 851 Hispanic/Latino (64%) 390 Black/African American (68%) 59 mixed race (71%) Families need to encourage students to take AP courses in 9th & 10th grade.

What do our AP students say…

Although college and career aspirations are high across almost all students, disparities exist in college degree attainment. Compared to 42% of White and 61% of Asian students, only 23% of African American and 15% of Latino students aged 25-29 have attained a bachelor's degree or higher. Despite these disparities, students still have high expectations for themselves…

This needs to begin in elementary and middle school

Expanding Academic Rigor We will continue to educate our feeder schools about the importance of challenging students during elementary school years, as well as during middle school. We will work with middle school teachers to develop the Learning Mindset skills and behaviors. We will continue to challenge our GHS students to explore AP courses.
