Agenda Introductions Advancing Student Success Increasing Capacity and Efficiency Data and Change Management Questions and Answers

Advancing Student Success National completion initiatives are pervasive, but awareness and practical frameworks to ensure improvement are lacking at state and institutional levels. Our industry still, to a large extent, views student success as an Admissions problem (“get me smarter students”). We will never improve, as an industry, with this as a focus (zero sum game). Course access remains the primary problem in our industry, according to surveyed students. Our industry has devoted very little energy to this problem.

Advancing Student Success - Strategies How have national completion initiatives influenced your institution? How big a problem is conflict-free access to required courses on your campus? What are you doing to improve students’ experience at registration?

Increasing Capacity and Efficiency The typical approach to space management focuses on statistical utilization, not capacity, yielding little practical and/or strategic value Most campuses think that they are out of space, often curtailing admissions and desired enrollment growth On average, many institutions can realize 20% enrollment growth by making a few changes to scheduling On most campuses, schedules are created in a highly decentralized process that is difficult to measure or manage On average, schedules have 26.41% more seats and 14.75% more sections than are needed by students On average, another 8.29% of schedule offerings are single-offering (“boutique”) courses with very low demand

Increasing Capacity and Efficiency - Questions Are you “out of space?” What is the impact of your answer to this question on your campus? How efficient is your institution relative to aligning course offerings to evolving student need? What are you doing to improve this? What will the impact be?

Data and Change Management Data-driven decision making is becoming a hot topic in our industry, but our strategic use of data is lagging behind most other industries Significant resources have been devoted to Institutional Research, but with a focus on compliance reporting and high-level outcomes – most of which is not “actionable” Data warehouses, reporting and visualization tools are becoming increasingly popular

Data and Change Management - Questions What needs to happen in our industry to maximize the strategic, pragmatic impact of data/analytics? How do you define “progress” in this area? Who defines “progress” – Leadership? State? National initiatives? Change or be changed? How much change are we as an industry willing to make? Are we prepared to create solutions?

“In times of change learners inherit the earth; while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.” Eric Hoffer
