What is an A Level? (Reformed) All A levels have changed, this has been phased over 3 years, but all are now on the new system For reformed subjects, students will get an A level by taking all exams/submitting all coursework, at end of Year 13.  4 modules for most subjects. Expectation of 6th Formers Be more independent students and take more responsibility for your own learning. Attend registration/assembly every day. Arrive in school for first timetabled lesson, then stay until registration, making use of private study facilities in any non-teaching lessons. Attend all lessons, including timetabled supervised study Parents to notify school of absence, not students (in advance where possible). Prepare fully for lessons and meet all set deadlines. See teachers in advance where there may be problems with a deadline. Any paid work should not interfere with school. General recommendation of maximum 10 hours per week. Homework guidelines – we expect students to do at least as much work outside the lesson as in it. This will vary on times of year, but where less homework set, independent reading around the subject is always good. No medical/dental appointments or driving lessons in school time, other than emergencies. Mobile phones.  Can be brought to school, must remain in bags during lessons and when in main school area.  May be used in Sixth Form area.  We cannot guarantee security! ASPIRE | BELIEVE | SUCCEED

Pure Maths + Statistics Course Structure Teacher 1: Mrs Rogers 3 lessons a fortnight Teacher 2: Mr Markey 5 lessons a fortnight Pure Maths + Statistics Pure Maths + Mechanics AS exams do not contribute to A2 results so most/all students will not take AS exams *Year 12 internal exam results combined with class tests and homework assignments will determine your UCAS predicted grade Your final grade for A level maths is determined by three external exams taken at the end of Year 13 (4 hours pure, 1 hour statistics and 1 hour mechanics) Fill in teacher names and timings

What should I be writing down during lessons? In folders: Teacher notes, Worked examples Assignments and tests In exercise books: Classwork – marked and corrected using the answers in the back of the book

Workings should be clear and detailed Number each part of the question. Show methods clearly. Use plenty of space. Work vertically. Ensure your handwriting is legible.

Homework Expectations … You will usually be expected to complete exercises started in class before the next lesson. (Your teachers will clarify). These will not be on SMH so you need to be organised. Ensure that you do questions of a range of difficulty in class so that you don’t leave all of the hard ones for homework. You must mark these yourself, checking after each question that you are doing it correctly. Work with your peers to sort out any issues (maybe set up a Maths group chat???) or ask your teachers.

… Homework Expectations Your teacher will give you the opportunity to ask about any issues that you have not resolved at the start of the following lesson (time may be limited so you need to have made every effort to resolve the issues yourselves first in advance). It will become very obvious if you do not keep on top of your bookwork as future lessons often build on previous knowledge and skills.

Assignment Expectations These are more formal homeworks that you will be given longer to do (often including exam style questions). These will be set on SMH. These will be handed in and assessed by your teacher. You will be given a mark and feedback. They should be handed in on named A4 paper and presented clearly with full workings.(They should be your best work). They are not tests so you are allowed to seek help from peers and/or teachers, but it is important to also develop your independent problem solving skills.

How To Succeed If you don’t understand something, ASK FOR HELP otherwise you’ll fall behind. Don’t try to pretend everything is ok if it’s not as things can escalate and you will get stressed. Everyone gets stuck sometimes, and part of what makes maths fun is the challenge! Practise maths in supervised study periods and at home. Make sure you get a balance between working with friends and working independently. In class, listen carefully and make clear notes. Always check your answers as you work. Come to maths clinic explanations of tricky topics or help with homework. (Mrs Rogers runs these – Wednesday lunchtime). Seek enrichment opportunities and embrace being a maths geek
