Presentation transcript:

Section 2.1

Tall, taller, tallest The world's tallest structure is the 828 m (2,717 ft) tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The building gained the official title of "Tallest Building in the World" at its opening on 4 January 2010. It is taller than any other man-made structure ever built.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, an organization that certifies buildings as the "World’s Tallest", recognizes a building only if at least fifty percent of its height is made up of floor plates containing habitable floor area.[1] Structures that do not meet this criterion, such as the CN Tower, are defined as "towers".

At over 800 metres (2625 feet) and more than 160 stories, Burj Khalifa holds the following records: • Tallest building in the world • Tallest free-standing structure in the world • Highest number of stories in the world • Highest occupied floor in the world • Highest outdoor observation deck in the world • Elevator with the longest travel distance in the world • Tallest service elevator in the world

Wonder what’s inside??? At The Top, Burj Khalifa – Observation deck on level 124 Atmosphere, Burj Khalifa – Fine dining restaurant on level 122 The Residence – 900 Burj Khalifa residences The Corporate Suites – 37 office floors Armani Hotel Dubai – 160 guestrooms and suites Armani Residences Dubai – 144 private residences The Park – 11 hectares park, 6 water features 3000 underground parking spaces The Club – 4-storey fitness and recreation annex

Imagine you are to build the tallest possible tower Imagine you are to build the tallest possible tower?! What forces will act on the building that you need to think of???

A force is a push or pull that tends to cause an object to change its movement or shape

The Newton The unit for measuring force (N) 1 Newton = amount of force to hold up a mass of 100g

Actual effect of a force on a structure depends on three things Magnitude (size of the force) 2. Direction 3. Location (where the force is applied)

Text - Pg. 282 Magnitude Bigger the magnitude, the stronger it is and the more effect it will have on a structure Direction Magnitude may be the same but direction different Location Where the force is applied affected the outcome
