WHY DO Corporations GIVE

the idea that businesses should balance profit-making activities with activities that benefit society.

Built to Serve

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act reduces corporate tax rate from 38% to 21% sparking a boom in business that ultimately lifts their own profits AND PAYCHECKS to employees WHO BOTH CARE & GIVE.

In Theory … Corporations will hire more “Non-Itemizers” whose increased disposable income can be shared with nonprofits. Corporations will hire more “Itemizers” who will use their increased tax deduction (50% to 60%) to fund important causes. Corporations will have more “Marketing Dollars” to invest in charity. (100% write-off) Corporations will have more “Charitable Dollars” to invest in charity. (50% write-off)

It’s already happening Boeing declared that they would spend $300 million on “employee-related and charitable investments” because of the tax plan. Wells Fargo announced that they would increase donations to nonprofits and community organizations in excess of $400 million in 2018.

Get Ready: Do your HOMEWORK Your Corporate Partners are Closer than you Think -Businesses are looking for relevant partners with common ground who understand their proposition and can demonstrate value in a relationship. Must demonstrate impact. “What value do you bring to the table– is it brand alignment and recognition? Is it CSR [corporate social responsibility]? Is it an opportunity to engage and develop their staff?

Break it down $ for $: tug at their heartstrings Your $500 gift means Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida can provide two future entrepreneurs a six-week, or 12 module small business training course to assist them in their pursuit of opening their own business. Your $1, 200 gift means Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida can provide a two- week paid internship in our stores or a quarter of class activities in our Pathways to Opportunity Program

They Are Business People: Talk business We (the non-profit) spent $150,000 with you last year for X services. Thank you… if you could just give us back 10% of that each quarter….

You’ve sealed the deal now show the love Thank you letters Phone calls Special Recognition SHOW THE IMPACT!

Economic and Fiscal Impact Florida Goodwills Economic and Fiscal Impact 2016

Community Placements

What is “impact analysis”? (1) ECONOMIC IMPACT = jobs, wages and economic “output” (2) FISCAL IMPACT = governmental revenues generated

Florida Goodwills The nine Florida Goodwills, that participated, placed over 30,519 people into jobs in 2016 (excluding placements within local Goodwills). For perspective, the state of Florida added 275,700 net new jobs in 2016 over 2015. Note: Estimated retention of Goodwill placements was at least 5 months. Goodwill Industries of South Florida does not provide soft-touch service.  Many of their community placements are accounted for in the operations impact tables, as they are placed internally at local retail stores. 17
