Rugby

History of Rugby Field games resembling rugby can be traced back to ancient Greece; however, William Webb Ellis is credited with inventing the game of Rugby. In 1823, he broke the rules of English football by picking up the ball and running with it during a football game at Rugby School. By 1870, the boys from Rugby School produced the first written rules for the game of Rugby and soon the idea of “running with the ball” caught on.

Rugby Equipment Collared jerseys Compression shorts Jock straps Long socks Proper cleats Padding on head, shoulders, & collar bone Mouth guards (optional) Field (pitch) 110 yards long by 75 yards wide Oval ball

Rules of Rugby Each team has 15 players on the field of play The duration of the game is 80 minutes long, with a 10 minute break between two 40 minute halves The ball can be advanced by carrying it with the hands or kicking it at any point on the field The ball can be passed laterally or backward, but never forward. Points are awarded for a try (5), conversion (2), penalty kick (3), and a drop goal (3)

Penalties Knock on – Ball is hit or passed forward without being kicked. This results in a scrum. Offside law – Players are not permitted to participate in the game from an offside position. Line out – Occurs when the ball is kicked or taken out of bounds
