DURING Reading - Strategies 1. Consciously think about what might be important. 2. Use the pictures. 3. Look at charts, maps, and illustrations. When you find challenging words, use what you know about reading: 1. Use the pictures. 2. Think about what makes sense. 3. Make connections. 4. Use context clues. 5. When you don't understand, stop and reread.

1st time: Read just to get the gist of the article 1st time: Read just to get the gist of the article. (No underlining, highlighting, etc.) 2nd time: Re-read the article and highlight any important information. Make marginal notes! When finished, put your highlighter or pencil in the middle of your article.
