The War Hawks Led by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun The War Hawks pushed for war They wanted Britain to stop seizing our ships They were tired of the assistance to native tribes Jays treaty allowed for this to continue

Supporters of the War Republicans supported the war Federalist did not

Who ruled the Sea? Britain, but their ships were scattered all over the world. Our ships were concentrated on the Eastern Coast. Privateers- private ships who agreed to help the US capture British ships.

Great Lakes Who ever controlled the Great Lakes won. William Henry Harrison was in charge of this campaign. He would kill Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames and his brother (Prophet). Battle of Tippecanoe Andrew Jackson controlled the Gulf of Mexico and the Creek Indians

Oliver Hazard Perry The Battle of Lake Erie OHP “ We have met the enemy Sir, and they are ours!” He uses smaller ships to out-maneuver the larger British ships that were short on supplies. When OHP takes control of he Great Lakes Theatre, the British are cut off from the main land.

Why were the lakes important?

Jackson V the Creeks The Creeks took over a federal Fort Mims led by Chief Red Eagle. Jackson brings 2000 vols down from TN and slaughters Creek forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Women and Children are not spared. Treaty of Fort Jackson- forced Creeks to give up their land. Red Eagle signs the treaty. Jackson was operating on his own. A Partisan Force.

Partisan Forces Andrew Jackson led a partisan force of Tennessee Volunteers to GA to fight the Creek Nation. Do you foresee any problems with his force? What advantages will Jackson have? Why would Jackson take it upon himself to fight the Creek and then the British in New Orleans?

DC under fire The British defeat the French in 1814 They send reinforcements to US The reinforcements break through defenses and burnt the Capital Building and the White House. Fort McHenry Stands (Baltimore, Maryland) September 13, 1814 Francis Scott Key- Star Spangled Banner 1931- becomes national anthem (ironically set to the drinking British tune)

Jackson At NO Jan 1815 AJ is helped by Jean Lafitte (lafeat) a well known pirate king. Lafitte is key in the decisive US victory Jackson is made a hero. British losses- 700 dead, 1400 wounded Jackson- 8 dead, 13 wounded\ Unfortunately, for the British, the war had already been ended by the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814. Neither side knew the war was over….

Bell ringer Which Native Tribe helped Andrew Jackoson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend? How did Oliver Hazard Perry defeat the British at Lake Erie? Why are “privateers” important to United States history?

Treaty of Ghent Dec 1814 Ended the war in Dec., but slow communications is a pain It stated the both belligerents would retain the lands it had before the war.
