Mr. Skidmore Chapter 1
1.Open your notebooks to a clean sheet of paper and title “Warm-up #1” Warm-Up Question #1: 1.Open your notebooks to a clean sheet of paper and title “Warm-up #1” 2.Under that, write “Key words” 3.Wait for further instructions Be sure to follow the proper format as discussed in the previous class. Date and label this “Warm-Up #1.”
Ask students to write down key words (bullet format) of ideas, places, things they see in the video above.
(5 minutes) With a partner, students will each be assigned ONE of the five subcategories of Earth Science to research. Each individual will research one subspecialty of their assigned subcategory and define it in their table. Pairs will then share their newfound knowledge and a full class discussion will follow. Teacher will fill out the previous table with student made definitions and explain further if needed.
Earth Science is a BROAD topic. There are FIVE main subcategories in Earth Science. Subcategory (5) Focuses of Study Explanation/Definition Astronomy 1.Astrophysics 2.Planetary Science Meteorology 1.Climatology 2.Atmospheric Chemistry Geology 1..Paleontology 2.Geochemistry Oceanography 1.Physical oceanography, 2.Marine geology Environmental Science 1.Environmental Soil Science 2.Environmental chemistry From the maps you use to travel, to finding out what to wear today by asking Alexa the weather, Earth Science is a part of our every day lives. Astronomy= the study of objects BEYOND Earth’s atmosphere Meteorology= The study of forces and processes that cause the atmosphere to change and produce weather Geology=The study of the materials that make up Earth, the processes that change these materials, and the history of Earth and its life-forms since its origin. Oceanography=The study of Earth’s oceans, which cover nearly ¾ of the entire planet. Environmental Science= The study of the interaction of organisms and their surroundings
Earth’s Systems: Earth is a SPHERE! Type of Sphere: Importance: Geosphere The area from the surface of the Earth down to its center. Atmosphere The blanket of gases that surrounds our planet Hydrosphere All water on Earth Cryosphere The region of permanently frozen water on Earth Biosphere Includes ALL organisms on Earth as well as the environments in which they live.
Teacher will ask students which ‘spheres’ are which using the picture above.
What are the steps to scientific method? Purpose: What do want to know? The Question! Research: What do we know? Previous research studies available? Hypothesis: An educated guess A prediction of what outcome the experiment will have Experiment: Tests the hypothesis Field experiments, statistical studies, or lab experiments Observations: Data collected during the experiment...what does the data mean? Conclusions: Is the hypothesis correct or incorrect? Was the guess wrong? Try again! Communicate: Share your results! PEOPLE REALLY HATE ELEPHANTS ON COMPACT CARS!!!!!
PEOPLE REALLY HATE ELEPHANTS ON COMPACT CARS
Here is another graphic organizer that might be useful Here is another graphic organizer that might be useful. It is a little different compared to the one I use, but still a very good resource for studying scientific method.
Think--Pair-Share (90 sec.) What is another way for you to remember the steps of scientific method?
Scientific Theory vs. Scientific Law A hypothesis that has been so well- tested, it is regarded as true Scientific theory can be proven false if there is enough evidence to disprove it. Example: Big Bang Well-tested Regarded as always true Shown via MATH Example: Law of Gravity
