Compound and Complex Sentences The climate is hot, and rain falls nearly every day. This sentence is a compound sentence. It has two simple sentences joined by a comma and a conjunction.

Compound and Complex Sentences As the world’s population gets larger, more food and building materials are needed. This sentence is a complex sentence. It has an independent clause and a dependent clause.

Compound and Complex Sentences A simple sentence has a complete subject and a complete predicate. The rain forest is disappearing.

Compound and Complex Sentences A compound sentence has two or more simple sentences joined by a comma and a conjunction such as and, but, or or. The rain forest is disappearing, and many of its plants and animals are disappearing too.
