Carter’s Moments

Camp David Accords Signed by Egyptian President Anwar Al Sadt and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on Sept. 17, 1978. After 12 days of secret negotiations at Camp David. Led to the 1979 Israel-Egypt Treaty Overseen by Jimmy Carter

Camp David Accords Prime Ministers were not on speaking terms. Carter refused for them to leave without signing some kind of peace agreement. See Carter’s abilities as a mediator of peace.

Iran Hostage Crisis November 4, 1979 Iran ruled by Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlevi, but overthrown in 1979 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Khomeini and followers were angered by the U.S. letting Pahlevi into the U.S for medical care.

Iran Hostage Crisis Nov. 4, 1979: 500 Iranian students stormed the U.S. embassy in Teheran, taking more than 60 Americans hostage. Khomeini supported their actions, and demanded the U.S. return the Shah to Iran.

Carter to Reagan Carter strikes back by sending military and freezing financial assets in the U.S. 13 month stand off, that outlived Carter’s presidency and the Shah. Images spread nightly on television. Ended January 20, 1981: Day of Reagan’s Inauguration.
